A little over a year ago we began thinking of names for our soon-to-be baby. We had to pick a girl and boy name since we weren't finding out the gender. (I highly recommend this. It was amazing!) Being a teacher, there were several names both boy and girl I vetoed right away due to the awful memories they inspired.
Picking girl names is quite a challenge because our last name is also a girl's first name. So we had to be really careful with the name we picked. I wanted any kid we had to have a name that was sort of unique...not Naveah unique, but the kind of name where she wouldn't have to go by Name K. because there were fourteen other kids with the same name in her grade.
Joe found this really cool book called A is For Atticus which had all literary names. He came across Harper which we both decided we loved. Neither of us had ever met anyone named Harper, I had never had a student named Harper, it was gender neutral making it sound strong, it didn't sound super girly with our last name, and it was #174 on the social security website for 2009. IT seemed perfect.
Flash forward to yesterday. Joe drops Harper off at daycare so I can sleep in on my day off. He texts me shortly after with this message...
"There's a new baby at daycare today. I'll bet you can't guess what her name is."
That's right. She's not even one year old, and already has to go by Harper K. because in her infant room of 12 babies, she's not the only one.
So much for that idea.

Still love the name Harper! She'll be the cool Harper ;)
That's a bummer. Though I have definitly noticed it's growing in popularity....in fact I may have seen it jump in the name polls this year....and there are 3 Harper's under the age of 2 on various blogs I read. Oh well. My mom thought she was being super creative when she named us Matt and Emily, and look how that turned out. Haha. There's just no predicting it! At least she'll be the coolest Harper in her class! :)
LOVE the name Harper!! It's so difficult to find names, especially when you're a teacher. We have 2 boy names and 2 girl names picked out. None of them are popular right now and all but one are some sort of family name. I hope and pray they don't get extremely popular before we have kids...or I may cry! haha If it makes you feel better, I've only heard of Harper names in the blog world!
aah - we decided on our girls name years ago - it was grandma's name and some people didn't like. It is popular now too... darn it!
I can't even tell you how many Gabriel, Emerson, Hunter and Sophia babies I have known in the past 2 years... Those names were unheard of back in the day. The unique isn't quite so unique.
I LOVE Harper, though. It's such an awesome name.
