Stories from the 8th grade

The students at my school do a weekly word-within-a-word list...a study of common root words. They have to make flash cards with the root word, the meaning and two words that relate to the root.
EX: Geo - earth...geology, geography.

They were working on their cards in study hall and putting words that had no relation to the root on the cards. The following conversation occurred:

ME: The words you put on their have to relate to the root word.
Student A: No they don't.
Me: Yes they do.
Student A: No, we had the root circum and I used circumcise...what does circumcise have to do with "around"
(I pause to think of a tactful, appropriate teacher response)
Student B: Because the cut AROUND...what, do you have a square one?
Student A: Oh...I get it.

Leave it to the students to find clever visual ways to explain things to each other.
